Reporting to the Professional Services Supervisor, the Electrical Engineer will design and engineer power-generation and distribution systems (up to 15 kV), build electrical systems (up to 600 V), and control wiring for both non-hazardous and hazardous areas. This role collaborates closely with sales, project management, design, and fabrication teams to deliver safe, code-compliant, and cost-effective engineering solutions.

What You Will Do

Your responsibilities will include, but not be limited to the following:

  • Lead engineering for electrical systems, including component sizing and selection (switchgear, transformers, MCCs, protection relays, VFDs, motor starters, etc.).
  • Perform detailed electrical calculations in accordance with relevant codes and project specifications.
  • Prepare and validate engineering deliverables: schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, and other drawing packages.
  • Estimate electrical costs for projects, both during pre-sale and post-sale stages.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (sales, procurement, fabrication, service) throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Develop, refine, and enforce engineering and design standards specific to our organization.
  • Create and maintain in-house tools (e.g., cable-sizing calculators, breaker-sizing models) to improve efficiency and consistency.
  • Serve as the technical authority for electrical design, reviewing and verifying engineering documentation.
  • Authenticate electrical drawings and engineering documents in accordance with APEGA requirements.
  • Troubleshoot and provide technical guidance during fabrication, assembly, testing, and commissioning phases.
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to process improvements for the engineering team.

Education, Skills and Experience

Your education and experience include:

  • Electrical Engineering Degree, oil & gas industry-related experience considered an asset
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng) in good standing with APEGA
  • 8 years of experience in industrial power systems and hazardous-area electrical design
  • Experience designing power generation systems (up to 15 kV) and building electrical systems (up to 600 V)
  • Skilled in specifying and sizing electrical components: switchgear, transformers, MCCs, protection relays, VFDs, breakers, motor starters, etc.
  • Proficient in electrical calculations (load flow, short-circuit, cable-sizing, grounding, etc.), compliant with relevant codes and project requirements
  • Track record of preparing and reviewing detailed engineering deliverables (schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layouts)
  • Experience estimating electrical costs (pre-sale and post-sale)
  • Hands-on experience with motors, instrumentation, and control wiring (including intrinsically safe / non-incendive systems)
  • Previous work in a fabrication environment, translating designs into real-world manufactured systems
  • Ability to develop internal engineering tools or processes (e.g., calculators for cable or breaker sizing)
  • Demonstrated leadership or mentorship: establishing design standards, guiding junior engineers, or leading tool development
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills: working with sales, PM, design, purchasing, and service teams
  • Strong problem-solving skills, especially in high-stakes, fast-paced, changing environments
  • Preferred:
  • Experience in the oil & gas, energy, or power generation industry
  • Familiarity with heat tracing systems
  • Previous involvement in process improvement or standardization of engineering practices
  • Experience influencing cross-functional teams or managing internal conflict

At Compass, we are always looking for the right people with “can do” attitudes and a willingness to help wherever needed, this means that you may need to take on other tasks and duties that may not be listed above or may change based on the location or needs of the company.
